There are thousands of mobile phones on the market right now, and knowing which one to go for is incredibly hard. There are lots of great devices, but there are also plenty that are simply sub-standard. Mobiles cost a fair amount of money nowadays too, so you’re going to want to make sure that you get good value for what you’re spending. Today we’re looking at what your mobile options are, in the hopes that it will help you make the best decision for you. So if you’re starting to shop for a new phone, then read on to find out what your choices are…
Price Options…
We’re going to presume that you’re looking for a smart phone, which is what most people today want to buy. You have a range of price options. A top end mobile is going to cost you over five hundred pounds, and will come loaded with features. On the other side, you can get a budget smart phone for around a hundred pounds. For a decently functioning middle of the road mobile you’re looking at paying a couple of hundred pounds, and that should probably be your minimum budget.
Screen Options…
The major screen factor that you need to think about is size. A bigger screen will not only make it more comfortable to watch videos and read web pages without scrolling too much, but will also make it more comfortable to type. Smart phones tend not to have physical keyboards, so you’re going to be typing on an on screen keyboard, and the bigger the screen is the bigger and easier to use the keyboard will be. Top end mobiles have screens of around five inches, but something of 4.5 inches or so is fine. Things like screen resolution and PPI don’t matter so much, since all screens are pretty good nowadays. Just make sure that the display is nice and crisp and clear, and you’ll be fine.
Processor Options…
The processor is like the engine for your car, and as such it’s pretty important. The more power you have the faster your phone will be. However, the huge power that’s offered by top end devices really isn’t necessary for average users. Power will either be listed under processor or under CPU, and you want a minimum or around 1200 MHz- or 1.2 GHz, it’s the same thing. Dual or quad core processors tend to be more reliable than single core processors, but it’s the amount of power that’s really important.
3G or 4G Internet Phone Options…
All smart phones can connect to the internet using 3G, and some of the newer models will also be able to connect using 4G networks. When you’re looking at an internet phone you’ll need to decide which to go with. The benefit of a 4G internet phone is that you’ll get much faster internet connectivity, which is much better for streaming movies and TV and for downloading too. However, not all customers can get 4G access. If you’re thinking about going for a 4G phone it’s important that you check to see if you live in a location that can access a 4G network. You’ll also have to be a current customer of EE, or be willing to switch your mobile contract to EE, since that’s the only major provider that currently offers a 4G package. 4G isn’t cheap as a service, but for some customers the faster speeds are worth it.
Internal Memory Options…
Internal memory is the amount of stuff your phone can store. That means how much music and data and how many photos and games you can keep on your device. Even the most basic of smart phones nowadays comes with around 8 GB of memory, and most average phones get 16 GB. Top end models will come with 32 GB or 64 GB. How much you choose really depends on how much stuff you want to keep on your phone. If you want to store your whole music collection then you’re going to need a lot of memory. However, memory is quite expensive and can make a big price difference if you decide to go for something with more memory than the basic model. A better idea is to make sure that the mobile you buy has a Micro SD card slot. This will mean that you can go to any electronics store and buy a relatively cheap memory card to add extra memory to your phone.
Brand Options…
There are plenty of manufacturers of mobile phones. If you’re looking for a high end model you’re probably going to want to look at Apple, HTC and Samsung, since they make the best quality devices. Budget shoppers should watch out for Huawei, since they tend to offer the best prices. Other than that, go for the brand that makes a phone you like, it’s as simple as that.
Operating System Options…
A smart phone, just like a computer, needs an operating system. You have four main choices when it comes to which operating system you use. All Apple phones use Apple’s iOS system, which is easy to use. You also get a lot of support; it’s a popular system so there are lots of app and software options for you to download. The other very popular operating system is Android, this is also easy to use but is more flexible than an Apple system and it lets you customise your phone more easily. Since it’s also popular, again you get lots of app and software downloading choices. Microsoft also makes a Windows phone operating system, usually seen on models made by Nokia or HTC. Windows isn’t quite as intuitive as Android or Apple, and can be a little clumsy, though the new version of Windows, Windows 8, is a big improvement. There aren’t so many download options available to you though. Finally, there’s the RIM operating system that’s only found on phones made by Blackberry, so if you want a Blackberry this will be the system that you have to use.
