Split nails can cause pain and inconvenience to a woman on her way to looking pretty. There is worry connected to the broken nails in the sense that one always gets afraid of handling things with the thought that they might break the nails further. It is therefore essential to fix split nails to prevent further damage to the unbroken parts as well as protecting the damaged parts. Fixing the split also helps in covering the unbroken part with the nail polish with ease.

One’s nail is first cleared of the current nail polish. A piece of cotton wool soaked in nail polish remover is used to remove the nail polish from the nail plate. Care is taken not to leave the cotton wool particles stuck in the broken part. It is advisable that the polish can be removed in the direction of the split to reduce the chances of the cotton particles being caught by the split. A teabag paper is used to repair the split nail. It is cut on the top using a pair of scissors then the tea leaves are dumped. The tea bag paper should not be tampered with so that it can wholly cover the nail. The paper should touch the edges of the nails especially when the split is more profound. In such an instance, the tea bag paper is placed close to the cuticle. However, if the split is on the nail tip, the tea bag paper is made to cover about half the nail.

The tea bag paper is held in place by the nail glue. Alternatively, a clear nail polish that acts as a base coat can be applied to the broken part of the nail. This base coat serves the same purpose as the nail glue by holding the paper in place under the condition that it is a thin layer. A thicker one might chip off faster. Before the base coat or the glue dries, the tea bag paper is carefully placed on the nail and then smoothened from the nail bed towards the tip to ensure that there are no bubbles trapped underneath the paper. The nail polish underneath is given time to dry. The excess tea bag paper hanging is then cut and shaped by filing later when it will be less delicate.

Another stroke of a clear nail polish or nail glue is applied since the tea bag paper is safe on the nail. The polish should be made to extend past the nail to reach the tea bag. Some more time is given for the polish to dry. After drying up, the nail file is used to remove the tea bag and any pieces on the edge of the nail. Another final coat of nail polish is applied and swiping along the edge is done to take the place of the teabag. This will protect the teabag from lifting given that enough time is given for drying that is about ten minutes. The nails are then painted ordinarily except the split one where a lighter polish is applied because three layers have already been applied. In so doing, the elegance resulting from good looking nails is restored.
