The Samsung Galaxy S4 is perhaps the best phone on the smartphone market ever. Its an incredible, beautiful phone although some people do consider the build quality a little lower than some of the other premium phones in the market. In this article, well take a look at the specifications of the phone against its predecessor the Samsung Galaxy S3. By the end of this, youll know how its better and why it is a massive advancement on the previous Samsung Galaxy S model.
The Processor
The processor on the Samsung Galaxy S4 is a 1.9GHz Quad Core processor compared to a 1.4GHz processor on the Samsung Galaxy S3. Its powerful, snappy, and zippy and able to do more high intensity activities and more multitasking than the Samsung Galaxy S3.
The Memory
The RAM on the phones is doubled on the Samsung Galaxy S4 compared to the Samsung Galaxy S3 with 2GB of RAM.
Internal Storage
On internal storage both phones are the same with variants with 16, 32, and 64GB of internal storage. Both also come with expandable memory through the possibility of adding a microSD card. Its worth noting that not all phones will provide the full amount of internal storage because some is used up by the operating system and default applications that are installed. With the Samsung Galaxy S phones, you tend to get around 9GB of storage free for you to use.
The Operating System
The operating system on the Samsung Galaxy S3 is Android 4.1.2. On Samsung Galaxy S4 the next generation is used, the Android 4.2.2.
The Superb Displays
Both phones feature superb displays that are frankly amongst the best on the market. The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the S4 have super AMOLED HD screens with the Samsung Galaxy S4 having a full HD 5-inch display compared to a 4.8-inch on the Samsung Galaxy S3.
When it comes to pixels, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is 1920×1080 compared with 1280×720 on the Samsung Galaxy S3. Pixel density is also much higher on the Samsung Galaxy S4 and just about as high as you see in the market except with the HTC One, the pixels per inch are 440 compared to 306 on the Samsung Galaxy S3.
The Battery
The battery has also been increased in size in the Samsung Galaxy S4 and it will get you through a day of doing pretty high intensity activities. It is 2600mAh compared to 2100mAh on the Samsung Galaxy S3. The batteries tend to do fairly well and are actually removable so you can get a spare to hold with you if you arent going to be able to get access to power.
The Cameras
The superb camera on the Samsung Galaxy S4 has been rated the best on the market by Which? Magazine. It is a 13MP camera that is brilliant at performing in all around conditions including low light situations. It has some excellent features such as sports mode, active mode, beauty face, and best shot which really are easy to use. The S3 was a good camera at 8MP that is below the level of the Samsung Galaxy S4.
The front facing camera is very similar at 2MP on the Samsung Galaxy S4 and 1.9MP on the Samsung Galaxy S3.
4G Capacity (LTE)
Both phones have LTE (Long Term Evolution) capacity. The Samsung Galaxy S4 has it in all of their models whereas the Samsung Galaxy S3 only has it in selected models.
The Dimensions of the Phones
The height, weight, and thickness of the Samsung Galaxy S4 are 136.6mm x 69.8mm x 7.9mm. It is thinner and slightly less wide than the Samsung Galaxy S3 which measures 136.6mm x 70.6mm x 8.6mm.
Despite it having a larger screen by 0.2 inches, it is also slightly lighter than S3 at 130g compared to 133g on the Samsung Galaxy S3.
Near Field Communication (NFC)
Both phones have NFC enabled meaning they are future proofed for this. The only phone really in the top tier of the market that doesnt have NFC is the iPhone 5 so we should expect to see it in the future series.
Both phones also have micro-SIMs rather than standard SIMs.
The Appearance and Overall
The appearance of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is nicer for me than the Samsung Galaxy S3. It has a superb screen and less waste around the edges. It is an edge to edge screen with a very small outer bevel. It feels lovely in the hand and theres also a lot of good accessories that you can get for it such as pretty trendy flip covers. You can get these from eBay for anything from £15 to £50. You could of course go for a cheaper one but if youve got a £500+ phone in your hand, then youll want to get a premium cover to keep the emphasis on quality when you have the phone.
Contracts
Right now, its only Everything Everywhere that has 4G capacity, although Vodafone, O2, and 3 Mobile are rolling out their networks at the moment. A contract with 2GB of data, unlimited calls, and unlimited texts on 4G through Everything Everywhere costs around £41 a month. And you would pay £29.99 for the Samsung Galaxy S4 model. You can get significantly cheaper deals on the Samsung Galaxy S3 because it of course is a superseded model and you can get a similar sort of package for about £10 cheaper. If you want to go higher on the data then the Samsung Galaxy S4 with 20GB of data costs around £60.
So there you have it, a look at the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Samsung Galaxy S3. Both are superb phones and the Samsung Galaxy remains in the top 10 phones on the market at the moment. It really was an incredible phone, and its amazing that it stood the test of time as well as it has. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is the undisputed king for me in the smartphone market and has set new standards in terms of quality of performance and specifications. Samsung are leaders in the market at the moment along with HTC.
