18 Min Read

The European rail pass probably offers one of the best ways to travel around Europe. For those looking to take in some of the breath taking scenery or experience the wonderful European capitals in all their glory a train pass provides the perfect opportunity. Often referred to as the Eurail pass commuters have the opportunity to simply explore one country as much as possible or even take the journey of a lifetime and visit up to 24 countries. The pass covers some of the better known European cities, such as Paris, Berlin, Rome, but also explores some of the lesser known cities which have just as much to offer.

Many people may consider making such an incredible journey around Europe by plane, although this typically involves having to contend with airport check-ins. Not only that, taking to the air means that a passenger is going to be confined to their chair for the entire journey and doesn’t therefore get the chance to take in some of the breath taking views from border to border. There is probably no greater sight that travelling at just over 200 miles per hour, whilst taking in the scene of the snow-capped Swiss Alps, then within a short space of time taking in the wonders of the Italian vineyards.

What Type of Adventure Are You Looking For?

The European rail pass offers several opportunities. One of the most popular choices is the regional rail pass, which encompasses two bordering countries. Imagine if it has always been a dream to visit a certain country and this country just happens to border yet another dream destination. Rather than just staying put in one destination, commuters have the ability to see what is on offer in two fantastic countries.

There is also the chance to visit four bordering countries. Many countries in Europe are interconnected or bordered with each other in some way. The stories that a traveller could tell to their friends and family would be simply amazing if they had the opportunity to visit up to four countries in a short space of time. A popular example of this may be to visit Germany, Italy, Spain and France. All of these countries are wonderful destinations in the own right, but surely the experience would be four times as great if there was a chance to see all of these.

With so much going on around Europe it might seem like a shame to cut the enjoyment short by simply taking a traditional one week or two week holiday. This is why so many people choose to go backpacking around Europe and spend many, many weeks or months on the road. This is simply the best way to enjoy the sights and experiences on offer from such a beautiful and yet diverse continent. There are train passes which allow passengers to make this once in a lifetime journey, and at their own pace.

It really is a shame that many Europeans choose to go to holiday destinations on various other continents when there is so much to see and do on their own doorstep.

Ana Aleksejeva has travelled extensively around Europe and has documented her journeys through her travel articles. She believes that a European rail pass is probably the easiest way to travel around Europe and enjoy the sights. She spends much of her train journeys reading up on the countries she’s about to visit, whilst making many notes in her travel journal.
