Risk Factors, Hazards in Oil Plants and usage of H2S Analysers

2 Min Read

In industries such as the Oil Plants, the presence of hazards is always there. This is why most Governments around the world have placed strict rules demanding better protection and risk mitigation practices from these industries.

Let us take a look at some of the common hazards faced by these Oil Plants and ways that can be followed to mitigate these hazards.

• Health Hazards – The common type of health hazard that occurs in these gas plants is the exposure to harmful chemicals like H2S. Oil or a chemical plant usually consists of hundreds of employees. During chemical reactions, harmful gases might get precipitated and released. Therefore, to minimize that risk, devices like H2S analysers must be installed in plants.

Even then, these analysers can only detect the presence of the gas. To prevent the gas from affecting the employees, proper precautionary measures must be taken. For instance, the employees must wear proper gloves. Organ damage is also a common problem that occurs due to increased exposure of a particular chemical. Therefore, health hazard mitigation is a must when it comes to oil and gas plants.

• Heat Hazards – Gas and oil plants naturally produce a lot of heat. The heat that the plant produces is usually called as the calorific value of that plant. Usually, there is a threshold calorific value that the plant can hold. If the heat inside the plant goes anywhere beyond that point, the plant will eventually succumb to the heat. Therefore, calorific value analyser must be placed inside the plant to measure the heat value in real time.

Once the value gets beyond the threshold value, necessary steps must be taken to bring down the heat value and prevent the plant from going out of service.

• Fire Hazards – Obviously, an oil plant will eventually have fire hazards. Most of the products involved in the production of oil are highly inflammable and therefore, necessary precautions must be taken to ensure that there are no fire breaches. Fire alarms and analysers will help you to realize and mitigate fire hazards in a quick and efficient manner.

Generally, all employees of the plant must be trained in emergency fire evacuation drills that will help then when there is a real fire hazard.
More than anything, regular maintenance would take care of most issues and mitigate almost all sorts of hazards. So, it is quintessential that plants be subjected to regular and efficient maintenance.
