Austria is without doubt one of the best places to visit in Europe. The country is steeped in history and also happens to be one of the most beautiful places to see. There are various traditions that still hold true to this day and a wide variety of activities to keep any holidaymaker, irrespective of age and interests, happy. Admittedly, Austria, along with Switzerland, is typically viewed as a winter sports destination, although there is so much more to this stunning country than first meets the eye. There is also the opportunity to travel around this great land and one of the easiest ways to do this is by the wealth of Austrian trains. This article introduces some of the many great tourist attractions in Austria.
Melk Abbey
Just the simple fact that Melk Abbey is located on the top of a cliff whilst overlooking the Danube River is more than enough reason for many visitors to want to come and see this superb attraction. In fact, the Melk Abbey is probably one of the most famous monasteries anywhere in the world. However, it didn’t start out this way, as the building was previously occupied by Leopold II and was his palatial castle. The structure was then transformed in the 2nd century once it had been gifted to the monks, who in turn made this a place to learn and be at peace with oneself. The Melk Abbey is now better known as a place for music and liberal arts, as well as being a fine example of Baroque architecture.
Grossglockner Alpine Road
The Grossglockner Alpine Road offers one of the most outstanding and breath-taking views anywhere in Austria. This is a toll road, but the expense really is worth it for tourists once they get to the top and take in the mesmeric views. The Kaiser Franz Josef Hohe Visitor Centre can be found at the top of the Alpine road and it is from here that visitors can see the highest mountain in Austria, the Grossglockner, it all its glory. This really is a sight to behold and the alpine scenery is likely to be something that is never going to be forgotten once seen. The road is typically open from May to October, so if this is something on the agenda a little careful planning may be required.
Schonbrunn Palace
One of the most popular tourist attractions in Austria must be the Schonnbrunn Palace. It makes no difference which part of the country a tourist is visiting as the palace is easily accessible from a wide variety of Austrian trains up and down the country. The palace was built over a period of 16 years from the 17th century to the 18th century and can boast well in excess of 1,400 rooms. This is honestly one of the grandest sites that anyone can ever hope to see. There also happens to be a park within the palace grounds that plays host to the oldest zoo in the world, a maze, a labyrinth and various other attractions that must be seen.
Ana Aleksejeva is always happiest when she is catching a train to various destinations around Europe. In fact, she has documented many of her adventures in her extremely well received series of travel articles. She has often used Austrian trains to travel around the country and states that they are some of the cleanest and most efficient trains she has ever travelled on.
