Your Apple TV isnt going to do you much good if you dont get it up and onto your homes wireless broadband Internet connection soon after purchase. Without it, the Apple TV is essentially nothing more than a little black box that sits near your television set. With it, you can use the Apple TV to stream audio, video and even pictures to your television set or home theater from devices like computers, iPads, iPhones and even Apples iPod Touch device. Apple TV also supports online streaming video services like Netflix and YouTube which you wouldnt be able to connect to without the wireless broadband Internet connection.
Step 1
Verify that your Apple TV is connected to your television set with an HDMI cable. Make sure that one end of the HDMI cable is plugged into the single HDMI input on the rear of the Apple TV. Make sure that the other end of the HDMI cable is plugged into an HDMI input on your television set. Your Apple TV needs to be connected to your television set before it can be connected to the Internet.
Step 2
Turn on your television set and switch to the HDMI input in use by the Apple TV. If you plugged the Apple TV into the third HDMI input on your television set, for example, press the “Input†button on your TV remote until the channel labeled “HDMI 3†appears on screen.
Additionally, make sure that no Ethernet cable is plugged into the back of your Apple TV. If an Ethernet cable is connected to the Apple TV, the device will automatically use a wired Internet connection. There must be no Ethernet connection present for a wireless broadband Internet connection to be successful.
Step 3
Turn on your Apple TV using the included remote control. Once on, select the grey “Settings†icon from the main menu. The “Settings†icon on an Apple TV looks almost identical to the “Settings†icon on an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.
Step 4
Open the “General†menu selection and choose the option labeled “Network.†Once opened, select the menu option labeled “Configure Wireless†to begin the process of connecting your Apple TV to a wireless Internet connection.
Step 5
Select the SSID of your wireless connection from the list on screen. If necessary, use the Apple TV remote control to input the password that you have assigned to the network. Once finished, select the button on screen labeled “Done.â€
The Apple TV will begin to test the wireless broadband Internet connection. So long as youve selected the right network and have input the correct password, you will soon see a message reading “Connection Succeeded†on your television screen. Your Apple TV can now use the Internet.
If you are having quality issues while streaming description to your Apple TV over your home network, you may want to consider switching to a wired connection. While wireless connections are decidedly more convenient, wired connections will always provide better quality when it comes to audio and video streaming from one device to another.
