You’ll find the island of Comino right at the heart of the channel that divides Malta and Gozo. Fans of diving, swimming and snorkelling all descend on the island every year as it is one of the most beautiful in the region.
The world-famous Blue Lagoon is situated between here and the island of Cominotto which lies just next to it. This is one of the most stunning sights in the region, with the iconic and perfectly clear blue water likely to take your breath away. There is little to no noise on Comino, with just eight permanent residents living here.
You can stay on the island too. Comino is home to a charming but modern hotel which welcomes guests from all over the world throughout the year.
History
Whilst the area has been either entirely deserted or home to a very low population for long stretches of its fascinating history, there is evidence to suggest that the island was home to farmers during the Roman era.
A small church was built on the island back in 1618 and has been restored on several occasions since its original construction. In the middle ages, Comino was a favourite of pirates and marauders who were drawn in by its coastline, cliffs and several deep caves.
The Knights of Malta
Hunting for wild boar and hare, the Knights of Malta used Comino as their recreational grounds. They were extremely protective of the island’s game, and in 1416 the people put pressure on the King to build a tower to act as a warning to pirates and marauders. The money raised from a new tax, however, was not used for the tower, leaving Comino without defence for two centuries.
St Mary’s Tower
Built by the Knights of Malta in 1681, St Mary’s Tower is Comino’s most important piece of architecture. Part of a line of defensive towers built on the island’s southern coast, St Mary’s Tower is situated at 80m above sea level and has four turrets at the corners.
