The Algarve Coast is one of the most beautiful regions in Europe; its capital, Faro, is steeped in history, sun and exciting tourism opportunities. It is particularly amenable for fitness-focussed holidaymakers. The versatile local geography of sea and mountains plays host to a large variety of things to do. Whether that see you indulging in gentle hobbies or something more demanding, Faro has something for everyone.
Rock Climbing
With facilities and courses for climbers of all abilities, rock climbing is a great starter activity for your holiday. Take in the beautiful views at the top of the Monchique mountain range… and then thrill yourself by abseiling your way back down one of its sheer sides. Or try the Tree Top course at the nearby Fóia Adventure Park, all the while kept safe by the trained professionals constantly looking on.
Paratriking
What is a paratrike? It’s a flying three-wheeled bike with a small engine and a giant parachute! And it’s the coolest way to see the golden Algarve coast: from above in the sky. It seats a passenger – you – and a trained driver, so you have nothing to worry about other than spending the 15-20 minute flight choosing which superlatives best describe the view.
Downhill Biking
Start at the top of Mount Fóia – the highest peak in the Algarve – and descend down a 30km course, taking in the fantastic vistas that stretch across the entire south western coast. Bikes are supplied by the guided tour, and progress is at your pace: need to stop for a rest, go ahead; want to take a selfie in front of a grand sweeping valley, do it! The freedom is yours. And there’s no better way of getting to know the area.
Skydiving
Freefalling for 70 seconds from 15,000 feet is one of the most unique and incredible experiences you will ever have in your life. Don’t worry – you will be taken down by experienced professionals who spend nearly every single one of their earth days going up and down through the sky. Although it does require courage to get on the plane, you will be rewarded with a torrent of emotions that will stay with you forever.
Monchique Challenge
The Monchique challenge is a brilliant multiple activity experience that grazes the line of being hard enough to be challenging, and yet moderate enough to still be enjoyed. Start by rock climbing, abseiling and zip lining down the mountain; then mountain bike 25km ride down to sea level, with lunch in between; before finishing the day by kayaking 8km across a lake. All equipment is provided and, again, the pace is up to you. What better way to test yourself and relish the beautiful surroundings?
It’s important to remember how reassuring it can be to invest in a single trip travel insurance policy, especially on an activities holiday – just in case. It’s easy to do and there are some very competitive prices out there. Happy hunting!
