Once you’ve got the camera of your dreams, you’ll almost certainly find that you don’t want to stop spending money there. The thing is that it’s not just about the camera: good photographs have just as much to do with the accessories as they do with the camera itself. The most important thing of all for that purpose is probably the lens, after all, and good lenses don’t come cheap.
That doesn’t mean, though, that you won’t be able to find accessories for GoPro cameras that you can afford. Read on to learn about a few of the best of them.
1. Specialised Action Mounts
If you ask most professionals about accessories for GoPro cameras, they’ll mostly think of mounts. There are all kinds of mounts for GoPro – they’re known for them – and some of them are very expensive indeed, but there are a whole load for under twenty dollars. Keep an eye out for the fence and post mounts, or the mounts that you can attach to a helmet for speedy action shots while you’re mid-bike.
2. GoPro Image Editing Software
Did you know that the image editing software, including an app version for smartphones, that GoPro make specifically to go with their cameras is in fact completely free? You can only use it with a GoPro camera, but assuming that you have one it’s one of the best – and, for obvious reasons, most affordable – accessories for GoPro cameras out there.
3. Non-Proprietary Tripods
Tripods are amazingly useful things for any photographer – amateur or otherwise – but the ones made by GoPro themselves are often very expensive. Instead of doing that, you can buy a GoPro tripod mount for ten bucks and then use that to attach your new camera to any standard tripod mount – which could not itself cost much more than the mount does, assuming you choose the right one! These are must-have accessories for GoPro cameras, not least because they eliminate the problem of shaky hands entirely.
4. General Camera Batteries
This can be a little bit hit and miss, because when you’re not buying accessories for GoPro cameras directly from the GoPro store you can never be quite as safe as you might like to be otherwise. If you’re willing to take that risk, though, there are actually plenty of other kinds of batteries that will work very well for most GoPro cameras even though their batteries are supposed to be specialised – and buying generic ones rather than branded ones is going to save you a lot of money. Just bear in mind they that probably won’t be as good.
5. Build Your Own Lens
Like all highly specialised accessories for GoPro cameras, good lenses don’t come cheap. If you know what you’re doing, though, GoPro sell lens housing kits that will allow you to build your own lenses assuming you know where to go for the other parts and how to put it all together. This isn’t an option for the faint of heart, but it can save massive amounts of money for the technically minded.
