The iPhone 5 hit the market selling 50 million phones in a very short period of time. The pre-order numbers were frankly astonishing. HTC on the other hand have had trouble over recent years producing some really good phones like the HTC Droid DNA and the HTC One X without getting the sales figures to match the quality of the phones. It appears that the HTC brand has not yet captured the imagination of the smartphone consumer and that Apple really has done a great job of doing so.
These manufacturers are therefore at different stages in their development. The truth is that the iPhone 5 didnt innovate as much as many of the pundits had hoped. It improved in several areas such as providing a bigger better display, more processing power, and a better Siri command system, however, it is a very similar phone to the iPhone 4S and many people looking for iPhone offers will do well to get the previous incumbent of the Apple flagship smartphone title.
In the HTC One, HTC have done a fantastic job. Some pundits rate the HTC One as the best phone in the industry even above the Samsung Galaxy S4. It certainly is a very attractive phone with sweep over from the back at the top and the bottom providing a very nice effect. It will appeal to the traditional HTC users as well as a whole new market of consumers who perhaps are getting tired of the iPhone brand.
Lets jump in to the processing power and other features that set the phones apart from each other.
The Processing Power
The HTC One comes with a Quad Core 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor. The Apple iPhone 5 is far less powerful with just a Dual Core 1.2GHz Apple A6 processor. Indeed, the HTC One also has twice the RAM with 2GB instead of 1GB of RAM. The iPhone 5 falls behind on specifications and in performance terms is also some way off. Of course the iPhone 5 is designed to perform with the applications that are on the phone whereas with Android, the HTC is at the mercy of the Android developers who are producing for many different types of phone. However, the HTC One is far snappy and a fantastic multitasker and for me better in terms of processing and speed than the iPhone 5.
Storage Capacity
The iPhone 5 comes in 16, 32, and 64GB variance. The HTC Once comes in 32GB and 64GB variance. Neither phone has the opportunity to expand the memory through a microSD card slot which is a real disappointment. It seems that several of the manufacturers have shied away from using a microSD card slot on their phones even at the premium end of the market. The flexibility offered by the microSD card slot really is a bonus and perhaps they should consider again in the future.
The Display
The displays of phones these days are simply amazing. If you look at the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S4, you have displays with the number of pixels that you would have found on a £1000 TV four or five years ago. The HTC One display is a 4.7-inch Super LCD 3 1920 x 1080 pixel display. It is for me much better than the iPhone 5 which comes in at 4 inches and is an IPS LCD 1136 x 640 display.
The iPhone 5 has got an extra half an inch on the previous flagship phones from the Apple organization, however, I would have like to see it a bit bigger and wed perhaps will see a 4.5+ inch display on the next iPhone. Smartphone consumers are wanting bigger displays, theres no doubt of that.
The HTC also has more pixels per inch at 469 compared to 326 on the iPhone. The iPhone offers a very good screen experience; however, the HTC One offers an amazing on screen performance.
The Battery Capacity
The battery power of the HTC One is far superior to the iPhone 5. It comes with 2300mAh of battery and that compares favourably with the 1440mAh on the iPhone 5. Of course the iPhone does get a lot out of its battery but the HTC One tends to last longer under normal operation and in conditions where you are using 4G LTE, Bluetooth, and other power intensive functions.
The Cameras
The camera on the HTC One is only 4MP. You may be shocked to hear this but then you will understand why its only 4MP when you hear that it is using ultra pixel technology that increases the amount you can get from the specifications. Indeed, the HTC One camera is amongst the best in the industry right up there with Samsung Galaxy S4. The iPhone 5 offers very good pictures too. But its audio on video is inferior to HTC Once and low light conditions are not as well catered for by the iPhone 5 either. Certainly, the HTC One wins on the main camera and also on the front camera with a 2.1MP camera compared to the iPhone 5s 1.2MP.
The Dimensions and Appearance
As weve just seen, the HTC One is a beautiful phone and for me is much better looking than the iPhone 5. It measures 137.4 x 68.2 x 9.3mm and weighs in a 143g. It feels more precious than premium in your hand and youll be excited to take it out of the box. The iPhone 5 measures 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6mm and weighs just 112g. It is the lightest of the premium end smartphones that are main stream at the moment. It is very comfortable in the hand and looks good and premium but the HTC One just has that extra bit of flair for me that sets it apart from the iPhone.
So there you have it, a look at the HTC One and the iPhone 5.
iPhone Offers
watch out for iPhone offers as the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 hits the market shortly. Youll see the price drop as we saw with the iPhone 4S. iPhone offers really do provide the opportunity to jump on the iPhone ladder either with a pay-as-you-go phone or a contract phone and save some really good money.
However, if you were considering a cheaper older phone then the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 will probably not be your best choice. You could look at the Samsung Galaxy S3 which is still in the top five or certainly the top 10 of smartphones available on the market at the moment and as well see in other reviews compares very favourably with the iPhone 5 in terms of specifications and price.
Getting the latest iPhone offers was not a problem for Sam Jones. He opted for a few minutes on sites like uSwitch and found that they were easy to get hold of.
