A major commercial endeavor that supports many photography studios or independent photographer. Wedding photography is the photography of activities relating to a wedding, and it comprises of photographs being taken of the couple before their marriage, as well as coverage during the wedding and at the reception.
Nowadays, there are many approaches taken to wedding photography with the main two approaches being a photo journalistic style whereby the photographer uses editorial reporting styles with little photographer interaction. The other main approach is a traditional wedding photography style where the photographer controls the interaction on the wedding day by taking classically posed shots. Another approach though less popular is a fashion based approach. It involves dramatic and innovative pictures such as those found in magazines. There is also another less popular approach where a couple selects a studio and makes an appointment in that studio to have their pictures taken. In attendance, there will be a hair stylist and a make-up artist. The couple will go through many changes of backgrounds as well as clothing. This is similar in manner to the fashion based approach.
A contemporary wedding photographer will usually provide some or all of the following:
• Indoor photography at a church, temple, or other private venue during the wedding ceremony and reception.
• Outdoor photography, this may be at a park, beach, or scenic location which is the couples’ choice on the day of the wedding, and/or during the engagement ceremony.
• Both posed and candid shots of the wedding couple and their guests at the religious or civil ceremony, and at the reception that follows afterwards.
• A formal photo shoot in a studio for either the wedding pictures or the engagement pictures.
• Digital services, such as digital prints or slides shows.
• Albums.
The emphasis in contemporary photography is to capture the story and atmosphere of the day, so that the viewers have an appreciation of what the day was like, rather than a series of endless predetermined poses. In simple terms, the pictures captured should have a strong visual appearance. A couple may request “first look” pictures where the bride and groom see each other before the ceremony to capture that reaction rather than first seeing each other as the bride walks down the aisle. Another type of a “first look” picture may be taking a shot of the father of the bride seeing the bride for the first time when she is just about to walk down the aisle with him.
