Bible has the phrase Anointing Oil about 20 times. It’s found in both New and Old Testaments, though more prominent in the Old Testament. The Bible clearly gives the recipe for Holy Anointing Oil and it was used for high priests and His descendants and tabernacle and embellishments to mark it as holy and set it aside for God. Though there’s no mention that the ingredients are super-powered, the oils are highly healing in nature. In the New Testament, Anointing oil was applied by the Disciples to heal the sick.
So, can Christians use Anointing Oil today? I say, Why not? Scripture doesn’t prohibit us from doing this. Of course, it is a symbol of Holy Spirit and can definitely be used for praying. Even though there are wide and varied versions of how Anointing Oil is done, the best oil is the one done back in Israel. It retains the natural recipe and for most part, the oils are unmatched! After all, it is God’s chosen country. Anointing in Hebrew means to massage, or rub a person using oil.
In the ancient church, individuals were anointed, for healing purposes because healers were also priests or holy men or women. In some cultures, people went (and still do) to a Shaman or Medicine Man or Woman for healing on all levels not just for the physical body. Jesus taught his disciples how to heal others using essential oils and through energy work although it is rarely taught today.
Till the 20th century, healing wasn’t only physical. Only once modern day medicine became popular, this pattern was started. However, how many of us are really healed by this method? Minimal right? Though necessary for a few situations, modern medicine doesn’t heal even physical problems! Can it deal with spiritual or emotional problems? And it certainly does not address the emotional and spiritual issues of dis-ease.
In Mark, Jesus tells his disciples that anointing them with oils will heal them. He also adds that physical and spiritual healing are associated with one another and it calls for the acceptance of the same from the those who are looking for healing. He says, healing starts from within and one must be in harmony with God and believe He is the ONLY one who can heal. So, Anointing Oil was utilized for healing in the bible.
