If you haven’t yet heard of OM, it’s time. Because Om is not only a sacred Sanskrit mantra chanted during yoga – it’s also the acronym for Orgasmic Meditation, one of the fastest growing health and meditative practices in the world.
What is OM?
OM has been around for a little while now, but some high profile Hollywood devotees, such as Gwyneth Paltrow, have seen it recently gain an upsurge in interest. Paltrow even discussed the topic at her sold-out Goop Health Summit, which brings together doctors, experts and inspirational speakers from all over the world to engage in conversation around health and wellness issues.
Nicole Daedone, the founder of the practice, coined the term Orgasmic Meditation, which works by integrating the power of focused attention with the deeply felt, connected experience of the female orgasm. It’s very important to note, however, that climax may or may not occur, and the goal is simply to truly and deeply “feel” the sensations of the body during a session.
The Practice
OM is a partnered practice in which one person is the “stroker” and the other is the “strokee”. The stroker lightly and continuously strokes the strokee’s clitoris for a set period of 15 minutes. The prescribed time of 15 minutes is designed to be short enough so it can be done on a regular basis, while still allowing enough time for the body and mind to enter what’s called a “state of orgasm”. And that’s the key distinction again: the goal is not necessarily to achieve climax, but simply to enjoy the experience as an act in and of itself. While climax encompasses a few minutes of physical pleasure, the orgasmic state is said to allow the practitioner to enter the realms of elevated consciousness, brought about by activation of the sexual impulse.
Those who regularly practice OM say that it instigates positive and uplifting change in every area of their life. By consciously harnessing the power of the female orgasm, the experience intensifies the sense of enlightenment through the way they act and react not only within their intimate relationships, but with everyone they encounter. This heightened level of consciousness has a dramatic effect on happiness and mental and physical health.
Steps to OM
When you’re first exploring the philosophy and practice of OM, it’s advisable to begin with a workshop run by trained facilitators. You can attend introductory courses as well as those with specific themes, including relationships, desire and healing. Every facet is designed to help you open up to your true potential though:
•Deeper intimacy
•Stronger connections
•Heightened sexual pleasure
•Learning to nourish your own body
•Speaking your truths and honouring your desires
•Learning from your sexual history
•Transforming trauma into power
•Liberation from victim mentality
•Finding lasting fulfilment
Begin the Journey
OM is highly beneficial for those wanting to learn more about their own bodies, the female orgasm and deeper sexual connections. But it can also be extremely successful when used as a healing tool for women who have suffered sexual trauma or negative sexual experiences. This effective, mindful practice can help you achieve a superior level of relaxation and consciousness that can be achieved in a 15-minute session, with benefits that could change your life.
