As a parent, it can be tempting to solve all of your child’s problems as quickly as possible. However, it’s often better if parents let their kids try to come up with solutions to their problems. Of course, your intervention is necessary if making a mistake will put your child or others in danger. It’s better if your child experiences the consequences of mistakes if the circumstances or problems are not extreme. Your child’s dilemma could be as simple as trying to put a toy together or solving a jigsaw puzzle. You don’t want your child to end up constantly relying on you even for the simplest things. Your child needs to develop problem solving skills on their own.

Most experts on parenting now believe that the most effective style of parenting is the kind known as authoritative. Authoritative style is not the same as the authoritarian style of parenting wherein children are expected to obey their parents without question. Authoritative parents, on the other hand, set certain rules and boundaries but are willing to discuss these openly with their kids. Don’t confuse positive parenting with permissive parenting, wherein your children don’t need to follow rules or boundaries. Positive, authoritative parenting means you take an active role in your children’s lives and you lay our appropriate rules and boundaries. In the same vein, you’re flexible and are willing to openly discuss with your children certain rules.

When it comes to positive parenting, one of its basic principles is spending time with the children. If you and your spouse both have jobs, this can be difficult to do, but it’s not impossible. Do you want your bond with your children to be strong and long lasting? Then you need to make time for them — play with them, talk to them, do things with them every day. Attend your child’s school pays or athletic events. It’s often the case that children develop behavior problems when they’re not secure and feel neglected. Your child should be your priority so make time for your child. Positive parenting isn’t always a bed of roses, and from time to time you’re going to goof up because there’s no such thing a a perfect parent. When it comes to good parenting, it doesn’t just mean having children who don’t behave badly or you having infinite patience. What it does mean is that you’re aware of what’s going on with your child and you’re taking active steps to raise your child well. Try using the positive parenting tips above and you’ll be well on your way to becoming a good, effective parent.
