When you’re buying a new mobile phone, it’s very easy to become overwhelmed by all your options. There are simply so many mobile handsets on today’s shelves that choosing between them can be tough. We all want something different from a phone, so there’s really no phone that’s the best choice for everyone, but there are a couple of things that everyone should keep in mind while they’re shopping.
The first of these things is obviously money. You’re looking at spending around £500 or so on a new, top of the line model, and that’s a fair investment.
Spending more on a phone doesn’t always necessarily mean that you’re going to get a better device though, and as long as you choose correctly this is a relatively long term investment since you’ll be hanging on to your new mobile for a couple of years.
Performance is the other factor. With more employers requiring a mobile contact number and more people giving up their home land line phones a decent and reliable mobile phone can be essential. You need to know that your new phone is capable of doing everything that you need it to do, and that means taking a close look at the performance specs on different models.
The only way that you can know which phone offers the best specs for price is by comparing different models. This may be easier said than done though. Mobiles come with spec sheets listing all of their features, but these sheets are usually so full of technical language and strange numbers that they can be tough for the average shopper to read. That’s why we’re here to help you out.
We’ve taken some of the top new phones on the market and put them to the test. Then we’ve matched models up in head to head comparisons so that you can easily see which the better model is. If you’re looking for a new mobile and want to know that you’re getting the best device then read on to find out more about what today’s two phones have to offer.
Introducing the Two Phones…
Nokia are one of the oldest names on the mobile market, and were one of the original pioneers of mobile technology. These days they’re best known for their Lumia line of Windows phones. Whilst older Windows mobile versions were clunky and notoriously difficult to use, the new Windows 8 versions is smooth and intuitive, making Windows phones more popular than ever.
We have got two Lumia devices for you today. The first is the Lumia 925, not quite the top end phone in the range, but a very affordable alternative. The second is the much more expensive Lumia 1020, being marketed right now as a camera phone. Is it worth spending more on your phone, or should you be saving yourself some cash?
What You’ll Pay…
You can pay full retail price and buy your phone outright, which will mean your device will be unlocked to all mobile providers. In this case, the Nokia Lumia 925 will cost you around £430, whilst the Nokia Lumia 1020 is much more expensive at around £600.
You can avoid that full up front price by signing an incentive contract with a mobile operator. The best deal on the 925 right now is with Vodafone, and you’ll pay no money down on a £25 a month contract. For the 1020 the best current deal is with O2, and again you’ll pay no money up front, this time on a £37 a month calling plan contract.
Don’t forget that mobile operator deals are frequently changing. It’s recommended that you use a mobile tariff comparison site such as uswitch.com to ensure that you’re getting the most up to date information and the lowest prices.
What They Share…
These two models are very similar they’re both Windows 8 devices, with 4 and a half inch touch screens with exactly the same screen resolution and PPI (pixels per inch), meaning that their displays are identical. Both run the same 1500 MHz processor, so they’re equally fast and responsive.
Both models are 4G capable, meaning that you’ll get faster mobile Internet speeds as long as you have a 4G data plan from your operator. You can read more about 4G here. The two models also look almost the same in design.
What the Nokia Lumia 925 Does Better…
The Nokia Lumia 925 is the cheaper model but it does have a couple of advantages over the Lumia 1020. It’s the smaller and more portable device. The 925 is around twenty per cent generally smaller than the 1020 and around twenty per cent thinner. It’s also lighter, weighing just 139 grams versus the 158 gram 1020. This makes the 925 easier to carry around with you all day.
The 925 also gets a better battery. It gets around ten per cent more standby time per battery charge cycle, averaging eighteen days versus sixteen days on the 1020, and around forty per cent more talk time, averaging eighteen and a half hours versus thirteen and a half hours. This means that you’ll need to charge your phone a lot less often.
What the Nokia Lumia 1020 Does Better…
The Nokia Lumia 1020 has a couple of advantages of its own though. It has the better camera. The 1020 has a huge 41 MP in built camera that is capable of capturing a lot more fine detail than the 8.7 MP camera on the 925, resulting in better quality photos.
The 1020 also has much more internal storage with a 32 GB internal memory as opposed to the 16 GB internal memory on the 925. This means that you can store double the amount of music, photos and other data on your device.
What’s the Best Buy?
Both of these are great phones, and very similar. If we have to choose one, we’ll sacrifice the better camera and more memory to get the much lower price on the Nokia Lumia 925.
