Spain’s Tenerife is popularly known as a sunny seaside holiday destination, but it’s much more than that. For those who like a bit of adventure, there’s a fun surprise in store: the region boasts a wide variety of indigenous animals. This makes it an exciting experience not just for wildlife enthusiasts, but also for those who like to discover little-known gems while on holiday. Right from the time you reach the destination and jump aboard a Tenerife Airport bus, keep your eyes peeled for some of these native animals.
Canary
Strikingly yellow in colour, the canary is an iconic symbol of the Spanish islands. You can often see them fluttering over farm crops, in ravines or amidst pine trees, looking for seeds to feed on. They usually reside in groups inside cup-shaped nests and their song is a wonderful tune you’ll hear in the countryside
Bolle’s Pigeon
This is not the usual pigeon you see tottering around the Tube station on a busy workday. Endemic to the area, this species inhabits the Canarian laurel forests. You can spot them in Anaga Country Park and in the municipality areas of La Victoria, Santa Úrsula and Los Silos, where they eat little berries from the laurel bushes, viñatigos and fayas.
Bottlenose Dolphin
The best place to see this majestic animal in its natural habitat along the Tenerife coast. The warm and mild waters of the area make it a perfect setting for this dark grey species. Bottlenose dolphins are extremely sociable and live in pods of up to twenty specimens, so you’re likely to enjoy the breath-taking sight of a whole group of these magnificent creatures.
Loggerhead Sea Turtle
The loggerhead sea turtle is a visitor to the island’s waters during the summer; it arrives from the north of America, Cuba and Mexico. This endangered species can be spotted along the coast and sometimes can be found on the beach. The Canarian government has introduced a preservation programme to protect them, ensuring that the turtles that get washed up on the shore are returned back to the sea after they have recovered and are able to survive on their own.
How to Get There
The easiest way to get to this holiday destination, is by taking a flight from the UK to Tenerife. There are several airlines that offer different flight options, so you are spoilt for choice.
