‘Summer in Menorca’ is a phrase that instantly brings to mind long relaxing holidays.
While there are plenty of locations from which to choose, one of the most picturesque resorts on this lovely island is Es Canutells.
The Resort
The resort is in a truly beautiful location relatively close to the island’s capital of Mahon. The bay is surrounded by smaller cliffs and trees, and the beach is a larger picturesque cove, favoured by photographers. There is one hotel in the resort along with some excellent private villa accommodation. There are a few basic shops and restaurants that cater for the relatively modest numbers of visitors to the resort. Those small numbers apply even during the summer in Menorca, as this is still largely a residential area, and is all the more attractive for that very reason.
The Facilities
As touched on above, there are only really a few basic shops aimed mainly at visitor essentials. For anything more significant, the short 15-20 minute drive to visit Mahon is necessary. There are a small number of restaurants in El Canutells, which are quiet and pleasant, and the one hotel here is largely ‘all-inclusive’, so there are not a vast range of dining opportunities. Once again, however, there are plenty of options available in Mahon.
The Beach
There is a small sandy beach, which is incredibly pretty, and the water, being in a cove, is flat and generally offers what most would regard as safe bathing – but, as always around the sea, take local advice on any given day. Note that some properties are located on the cliffs surrounding the beach, so they might involve a modestly steep climb up steps to access. During the summer in Menorca, there is a range of beach-based sporting activities available nearby that will appeal to those who love the sea.
Things to Do
This resort offers a ‘get away from it all’, relaxed holiday. If you’re expecting discos and lively café culture then you’re likely to be disappointed. During the day, there are opportunities for water sports and beach fun. There’s also some great walking, golf and sporting activities nearby (although not in the resort itself). Exploration of the surrounding countryside is a big activity here, and, if you’re lucky, you’ll also get to see some of the local wildlife amidst the picturesque landscape. If you want to take in some culture at a museum or gallery, you’ll need to make a journey into Mahon.
Transport
There is, theoretically, a bus from the resort into Mahon that runs throughout the summer in Menorca, however, the timetable is rather haphazard and reliability isn’t guaranteed. Renting a car is strongly recommended if you’re staying in the area. Do watch out for the country road that leads into the resort, as for a few miles it’s narrow and very twisty – so take special care.
Summary
If you enjoy being amongst quiet, unspoiled nature directly adjacent to the sea, then Es Canutells will probably be very much your sort of resort. It’s laid-back, undeveloped and a truly charming place to spend your summer in Menorca.
