While the Mediterranean weather and sensational skyline make it a popular destination for sun seekers, Benidorm is often overlooked by adventurers. Little do they know that it’s an excellent base for hiking enthusiasts. Just look out of your window as you drive from Alicante Airport to Benidorm to witness the rocky range sheltering the city. Only half an hour’s drive away, the majestic peaks are accessible by a number of different routes, each holding hidden gems for nature lovers to explore.
Sierra Helada Mountain
This nature park boasts impressive views over 300m cliffs and covers an impressive area of land. For those who like a challenge, follow the path along the cliff edge that takes you to the Albir Lighthouse, with fossil dunes and interesting flora to admire.
For a more relaxed outing, take the popular 3km trail. This route reveals beautiful coves and an old ochre mine, as well as great viewpoints where you can enjoy stunning sights of the Bay of Altea and Peñon de Ifach of Calpe.
Puig Campana Mountain
With its iconic groove, Alicante’s second highest peak is shrouded in legend and attracts many keen climbers. Those who do conquer its peak are rewarded with impressive views of Benidorm Island in the distance.
With a choice of three routes classed as low to medium difficulty, you’re sure to find a hike to please everyone. Choose from the popular “Volta de la Serraâ€, the “cami de la Cover del Rogetâ€, or try the complex “Ascension Puig Campanaâ€. You’ll get a good 4- to 6-hour trek here, depending on the chosen path, all starting from the Font del Moli.
Aitana Mountain
As the highest peak in the Province, ascending Aitana is one for the ambitious! The towering mountain range rises to 1,558m high and promises an exciting challenge. As you make your way towards the summit, you’ll travel through the Rabosa Pass, an angular crack in the giant mass of stone just large enough for a single person to squeeze through.
Ponoig Mountain
Known as the Sleeping Lion, this 1,181m high peak is characterised by its steep walls. It attracts daring climbers keen to conquer its daunting facade, as well as passionate amateurs. This is an excellent option for intrepid tourists who want to try their hand at outdoor climbing, and it also has a Via Ferrata for the daredevils among you.
If you’d rather take in the views without the thrill factor, there are a number of other walks on offer, ranging from 1 hour to 4 hours depending on your ability.
Sierra Bernia Mountain
This peak has everything for outdoor enthusiasts. An example of spectacular rock formation, the sharp summit promises awesome views of the entire coastline.
Historians will enjoy a visit to Fort Bernia, dating back to 1562, which perches on the southern slope. You’ll see remnants of domed structures and impressive towers that helped to defend the coastline. A truly magnificent feature, however, is the Forat Bernia, a natural tunnel carved into the hillside that narrows and widens as you pass through it.
