After over a 100 years, jazz, which grew from Louisiana ragtime, is now played and enjoyed around the world. The genre has evolved from the “big band” swing music of the 1920s and 1930s, to bebop during the 1940s, and onto modern day jazz-fusion, mixed with funk and R&B. What makes it so special, is the fact that all of its different styles still thrive today and command a loyal following of aficionados.
While you’re enjoying your stay in one of the many luxurious villas in Menorca, take the time to explore and enjoy the island’s music scene – you’ll be surprised at how large and diversified it is. To get you started, here are just a few of venues, clubs, and bars where you can find great jazz music played by incredible musicians.
May & June – The Menorca International Jazz Festival
Known by fans internationally as one of best jazz festivals around, this yearly event takes place at locations across the island between May and June. The program includes concerts and gigs, (outdoor and indoor) primarily in Ciutadella, Mahón (Maó), Alaior and Ferreries. Because the festival takes place at so many venues, it’s a good idea to consider renting villas in Menorca to fully enjoy this exciting festival that attracts world-famous artists every year.
Outside the Festival
If you miss the festival when you’re visiting the island, there are still plenty of places where you can find something similar. You’ll find most clubs or bars either in Mahón (Maó) or Ciutadella. Here is a small selection of them.
Akelaree Jazz Dance Club
Thursday night is jazz night at this well-known Mahón night spot. Enjoy a cocktail and listen to live blues and soul music as well. The establishment covers two floors and there is even a garden for a more intimate place to sit back and relax!
