31202Head High and Take on the Hiking Trails of Tignes

No Comments 3 Min Read

Tignes is one of the few mountain resorts which boast all-year-round possibilities for skiing. This extraordinary fact sometimes unjustly overshadows even the oldest and most natural interaction between man and mountain, namely climbing. An oversight of this kind, however, should be criminal, because some of the treks which offer the most breathtaking views of the French Alps are located precisely in this region. As soon as you arrive and settle comfortably in a catered chalet, Tignes will begin to charm you with its variety of picturesque trails of graded difficulty. Read on to learn about some of the most famous among them.
Col de la Tourne
If you want to enjoy a pretty view of Tignes from far above, you should follow the trail leading up to Col de la Tourne. With its even path, relaxed slopes and bordering a couple of pretty lakes at the start, this trail turns gradually narrower and steeper as you approach your destination. Luckily, you get more toned up along the way, so the greater exertion does not come as a shock to your body.
Reserve Naturelle de Tignes
A trickling stream accompanies you on most of your walk along this valley. Cameras at the ready for the unusual and beautiful specimens of flora and fauna which inhabit this natural reserve.
Refuge du Palet
At the end of this trail, huddling under the shadows of the spiky peaks behind, is Refuge du Palet. It serves as a charming reward to anyone who holds out along the steep path. A word of advice: the way itself is as fascinating as your destination, so do use your pauses to draw not only breath but also to drink in the stunning vistas around you.
Clairiere des Condus
This trail leads you to some stunning views of the dam. True, you’ll have to climb some rocky formations and cross a couple of streams but the journey is worth every step. Make sure to keep any canine companions on a tight leash on this path as this is many a sheep’s preferred grazing area.
Safety
The high altitude of these trails necessitates that a number of safety precautions be observed by tourists. The appearance of one kind of weather, whether good or bad, at any given moment should not fool you into thinking it is going to last. You’d better always check the forecast before setting off anywhere. The steep and often rocky terrain you may need to traverse requires reliable footwear, ideally with a thick but flexible sole. Most trails are clearly marked and tourists are strongly advised not to improvise off track, since finding your way back may prove surprisingly hard. Most importantly, plan carefully ahead and do not allow the sun to set before you have reached a shelter.
If you have a positive mindset, a good hiking plan and a reservation at a catered chalet, Tignes with all its summer wonders, will welcome and leave you always craving to return. A fantastic experience that tires the legs but fills the eyes, your mountain holiday this summer will be a thing to remember and tell stories about.
