The Best Way To Paint A House is to make a plan and stick to it. The 10 stages I have laid out in this article are a proven and tested road map. Complete it stage by stage before moving on to the next. In no time at all you will have a first class look to your decorating efforts that most professional painters can only envy.
(1)Erect Scaffold Or Obtain Suitable ladders If the house to be painted is more than two levels, then a scaffold will need to be erected. If only two levels and there are no awkward areas that cannot be reached off of a ladder. Use a extension ladder that will reach with ease over the gutters.
(2)Survey The Exterior Now you have your means of reaching the gutters be it by ladder or scaffold. Are there any loose gutters or downpipes that need fixing? Look for rotten sills on the windows and other bad woodwork. Is there any broken windows? Does the masonry need any repairs? Have a notebook and make a list.
(3)Carry Out The Repairs Carry out all the repairs on the list. Some of them you may not be able to do, such as replacing rotten window sills if they are too far gone. For this you may need a carpenter. If the windows or doors have only minor areas of rot, cut out the rotten wood till you get to sound timber then prime with paint and then fill with a two-pack resin wood filler.
(4)Start With The Gutters Cleaning Them Out Place your ladder so it is at a good angle, and not on a slippery surface, underneath the soffit, clean out the gutters. It is always better if you have a friend who will foot the ladder for you. If not a bag of sand placed at the foot of the ladder will suffice.
(5)Paint The Gutters And Soffit Boards Scrape down and undercoat in white paint the soffit. When it is dry apply the gloss finish coat. If the gutters are the old type and made of metal, and they are to be finished in a black gloss, they will need a grey undercoat. If the gutters are the plastic type, keep clean or paint with black gloss.
(6)Apply The First Coat To Stonework Most houses have some stucco or masonry that will need painting. Scrape away any loose paint and fill with a exterior filler such as Toupret. Toupret is very easy to sand down. Apply first coat of exterior masonry paint.
(7) Undercoat Sashes Or Windows Prepare sashes by rubbing down, renewing loose or missing putties, filling, rubbing down priming if necessary, then applying white undercoat.
(8)Apply Second Coat Of Paint To Stonework Apply the final coat of masonry paint to all stonework.
(9)Gloss Sashes And The Down pipes The sashes should be now ready for a coat of gloss. Paint the down pipes in black gloss making sure you do not splash any on the other finished paint work.
(10)Paint Front And Back Doors Spend a little extra time when painting the entrance door. Make it a show-piece its the first thing people visiting your house will notice and they may judge the rest of your work on it’s appearance. Fill and rubdown between coats. An extra coat of gloss finish will do wonders. Have you a awkward paint problem? if so you will quickly find the solution at Londonwidepainters Ray the author can be found at Look him up
