Affordable Amsterdam: Free Activities Perfect for a Student Getaway

2 Min Read

You wouldn’t be wrong to say that the Dutch capital is by no means Europe’s cheapest destination, particularly if you’re a student on a tight budget. However, there are plenty of exciting and fun things you can do in the city free of charge – so there’s no need to break the bank to have a good time in Amsterdam.

Discover one of the biggest parks in the country, the iconic waterborne flower market and the inviting plaza which looks out onto the flamingo enclosure at the Artis Zoo. You won’t know what to do first!

The Bloemenmarkt Flowers

After arriving in the capital via your Amsterdam airport transport, it’s time to start checking out the fantastic free activities on offer here – and this should be your first stop. Having been around since the 1800s, this is the only floating flower market in the world and is undoubtedly worth a visit. It was built in order for flower traders of the 19th century to navigate through the city more easily with their products.

You’ll find it on the southern banks of the Singel Canal which is where it is moored. There are roughly 15 stalls all selling different horticultural goods including beautiful bouquets and ornaments for the garden.

The Artisplein Flamingos

You’ll find the famous public plaza along the northern edge of the Artis Zoo. This is a great place to enjoy a bite to eat or a relaxing drink (if you don’t mind spending a little) at the Café Restaurant de Plantage, or you can simply relax on the plaza and enjoy the views of the nearby flamingo and spoonbill enclosures.

Free Concerts at the Concertgebouw

This is very much the hub of classical music in Amsterdam. The stunning architecture of this neo-classical building is not to be missed and can be found on the eastern side of the Museumplein.

How to Get There

You can fly into the city from one of the many UK airports that offer this service, and from there the most convenient and cost-effective way to reach your accommodation is to take one of the Amsterdam airport transport options right through to your destination.

In order to get the best price on your Amsterdam airport transport, it is advisable to book well in advance of your departure date. Pre-book a shuttle transfer to take you direct to your accommodation – this mode of Amsterdam airport transport will take you from door to door without any hassle.

A great time in Amsterdam doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg, with plenty of great free activities available including concerts at the Concertgebouw, flamingo watching and the Bloemenmarkt flowers. It’s time to start organising your trip, and these free activities are a great place to start!
