Driving along roads in the stunning Mediterranean can be a real pleasure. Spectacular views and stunning scenery can be found around every corner, so if you love excitement and adventure when behind the wheel, these most scenic roads should definitely be on your list of holiday ‘must dos’.
Winding around breath-taking cliffs, taking in long tunnels and steep hairpin bends, the roads in this part of the world are just waiting to be explored. We have put together a list of some of our favourite scenic drives, and while the list is not exhaustive, it offers any adventure-loving driver a great place to start.
Amalfi Coast, Italy
Hands down, the drive along this incredible coastline in Italy is one of the best. Start your drive in Amalfi and wind your way along 15 km of ups, downs, twists and turns to Salerno. Through picture-postcard Italian towns perched on hanging cliff sides, the drive treats you to magnificent views over sparkling beaches, rock bridges and endless olive groves.
Er 101, Madeira
This interesting Portuguese road is only 3km long, but you’ll soon realise why! It’s so narrow that you cannot pass another vehicle, hence the one-way rule. Instagram lovers will revel in the photo opportunities provided by a drive through this area.
Adriatic Highway E65, Croatia
This is a classic when it comes to memorable journeys. Winding through the entire country, the route can be made into a fabulous road trip should you fancy a bit of independent travel. All the way from Rijeka to Dubrovnik you’ll stumble upon some incredible cities that are crying out to be visited. Not only that, but you can also take a trip off-route and visit Krk and Rab, two islands which are easily accessible.
Carretera a Sant Feliu, Spain
If you’re staying in Barcelona and fancy a trip out of the city, hire a car and head to this panoramic route that boasts some crazy twists and turns that appear to almost hang from the rocks. The drive offers a breath of fresh air and a welcome change from the bustling city.
Before You Go
Remember: your loss damage waiver isn’t a solution to everything! Before getting behind the wheel (especially when considering driving along some of these unfamiliar roads), you would be wise to purchase car hire excess insurance. Though your rental firm might offer you a loss damage waiver, this isn’t always as comprehensive as it seems. That is why car hire excess insurance purchased with an independent company is very much recommended.
Give yourself the peace of mind you need to enjoy your Mediterranean adventure, and don’t just rely on a loss damage waiver for those unpredicted issues. Instead, get your excess sorted with an independent broker as soon as possible.
Sam Walker is a specialist insurance expert at LowerHire, a company that offers low-cost single trip and annual multi-trip car hire excess insurance policies. Travellers can avoid the hidden costs of the loss damage waiver in their rental agreement and look forward to a stress-free car hire experience.
