A Croatia City Break for Game of Thrones Fans

2 Min Read

The award-winning Game of Thrones series has taken the world by storm over its eight-year run, but despite the show coming to an end in 2019, the story lives on in the heart of Croatia. From the charming city of Dubrovnik home to the famous King’s Landing to Daenarys Targaryen’s throne room and dragon lair in Split, there’s all sorts to discover.

As you explore this idyllic country, encompassed by the mesmerizingly blue Adriatic Sea, take in the captivating natural scenery and enjoy the Game of Thrones landmarks nestled within. Often the surroundings were so beautiful that the producers opted to leave the environment unaltered while filming!

Discover the famous fantasy world and relive the most memorable scenes of the show during a Croatia city break – this is sure to bring delight to any GOT fan.

Fort Lovrijenac, Dubrovnik

This site is sure to be one of the top spots of your Game of Thrones tour, and perhaps the most awe-inspiring. Fort Lovrijenac was the Red Keep, where sat the insufferable Kings Joffrey and Tommen before the reign of Queen Cersei. Although much of the castle was digitally created, the interior courtyards of the fort can easily be recognised as the backdrop for King Joffrey’s name day tournament which took place in season two. The fort is truly a sight to behold as it teeters out over the cliff-edge, making for wonderful photographs of both the building and the Adriatic Sea.

Trsteno Arboretum, Trsteno

During your visit to Dubrovnik, be sure to save plenty of time for another GOT hotspot in Trsteno, a tiny district within this Croatia city. Break away from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis and take a breath of fresh air in Trsteno Arboretum, the luscious and exquisite botanical gardens which were repurposed as the King’s Landing gardens.

This hidden gem is characterised by sixteenth-century architecture, giving it the perfect Renaissance feel for the show and deeming it a truly magical place to explore. While taking a relaxed stroll through the gardens, cast your mind back to the Tyrell plotting and scheming that once took place there!

Diocletian’s Palace, Split

A trip to Split is a journey to Essos, the land east of Westeros where most of Daenerys’ incredible journey took place. The Diocletian’s Palace is an architectural masterpiece, boasting marble structural work interspersed with stone, and a distinguishable Roman influence.

Any fan of the series will instantly be reminded of the days when Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion were kept and trained inside this majestic building, or indeed of the slave mutiny in season four, since the surrounding lanes double up as the streets of Meereen.

Make your Croatia city break an adventure to remember as you take a tour of the fabulous GOT locations while discovering some hidden gems and enjoying the superb natural delights on offer.
