Picking the right place for a couples retreat relies on a number of important aspects. It has to be warm, have places that serve great food, and enough space for some romantic private time. Gran Canaria is fast becoming renowned as a lovers’ paradise – due to the variety of experiences it has to offer and the excellent flight links from the UK.
This little list is compiled of the most alluring and intimate activities couples can enjoy on Gran Canaria. Transfer the theatre of your love to these balmy east Atlantic islands, and you might reap a lifetime of rewards!
Beaches
Maybe it’s the most obvious, but the stunning golden beaches are a great place to start. You can spend your days lounging in the sun and swimming in the warm lapping waves of the Atlantic at your leisure. There is also plenty of water sport action to augment those periods of extreme relaxation, plus the sandy dunes of Maspalomas to explore. You can also get away to secluded bays far from the crowds to enjoy some special moments together.
One of the best places to go is Playa del Guigui, which can only be reached by a 90-minute walk or a shuttle boat. The difficulty of access is rewarded however by Guigui’s isolation, and the natural beauty of the craggy volcanic rock formations shroud the beach from the outside world. Bliss…
A Day out in Las Palmas
The Gran Canaria capital is a beautiful city with charming cobbled streets and ancient alleyways that hide an abundance of lovely bars and cafes. It’s a very photogenic city, with plenty of nooks and crannies begging to be explored. There are markets and old churches to gaze at, with history peeping out of every junction.
Nights Out
For a wonderfully romantic night out, try out the Michelin quality food and service from Restaurante la Arquela. Located in the south of the island, a short drive west of Maspalomas, the quality of this eatery is fully worth the rather steep prices. Because of its established reputation, it is best to book in advance so you’ll avoid any romantic disappointment.
Alternatively, if it’s more lively action you and your partner are after, the freewheeling, all-singing Garbo’s is your best bet. With a cast of professional cabaret singers and dancers, this will be a night to remember.
The final must-see is the spectacular Gran Casino Costa Melanores. Get a taste of the high life with the many games tables and wander the luxurious gardens that surround the building. There is also a theatrical line-up of dancers and performers if gambling isn’t your bag.
Romantic Sunset
It may be a little clichéd, but there is nothing better than a glorious golden sunset to set the scene for romance – and the prime spot on the island is Roque Nublo. Set inland, this rock is accessed by a 15-minute climb and offers fabulous panoramic views in almost every direction.
