Searching for a way to get rid of the post-Christmas blues for good? Fly off to La Plange at the beginning of the year for a cheaper, quieter, more enjoyable holiday.
Money, Money, Money
It’s not all about saving money, but this is a good place to start especially if your February skiing trip is a cheeky extra holiday. Skiing holidays are often included in January sales meaning you could have a very affordable trip to La Plagne. Chalet and hotel accommodation are also often cheaper, and flights are much more reasonable compared to the Christmas holidays.
Peace and Quiet
Hitting the slopes in January and February means you’ll immediately notice that there are far fewer children around. For people travelling without kids this is a major bonus. Though some small skiers are perfectly well-behaved, the reduced numbers of classes and unsteady skiers on the pistes make skiing a much nicer experience.
Note: January is the quieter of the two months (and also less expensive) due to the various half-term holiday breaks in France and the UK.
Superb Snow
Over the past few years, early season conditions have been marvellous. Last year saw epic amounts of snow descend on La Plagne making for brilliant skiing. As January has some pretty cold temperatures, the snow stays fresh for longer – which means you can still be making fresh tracks days and days after a heavy fall. The area also looks stunning at this time of year, with chalet roofs covered in a thick blanket and tree branches weighed down by powdery snow.
Romance on the Slopes
January and February are great months to spend some quality time with your sweetheart in La Plagne. Chalet rental is a good idea as the area has lots of beautiful catered and self-catered accommodation options. In your La Plagne chalet, you can get cosy with a glass of wine or indulge in a hot chocolate – with whipped cream of course. If you want to totally relax, book a catered chalet so all you have to worry about is the slopes.
Goodbye, Party Town
Nightlife in the town can get pretty lively in the height of the season. This is awesome if you are young with endless energy but many of us prefer to relax after an active day. You’ll find that the bars are quieter in January and February and maintain a nice calm vibe. You can still go out and enjoy a few drinks (and even dance the night away if you want) but you won’t be doing it in the company of rowdy teenagers.
Empty Slopes
I can’t promise you will have completely empty slopes at the beginning of the year. However, with families at home and many workers back to their daily grinds, you’ll certainly notice the runs are quieter. With fewer people, the queues are shorter meaning you spend more time actually skiing and less waiting around for your turn.
If you haven’t already booked a January or February holiday to La Plagne, now is the time to do it. But before you do, heed my warning – once you go, you might just find you need an early season skiing trip every year!
