Antique dolls are of many types. Few are discussed below:
Queen Anne Dolls:
These are beautifully carved wooden dolls belonging to the seventeenth century. Craftsmen of England carve the dolls and their features from single wooden pieces and dress them like a queen. Their garments were unique and fully hand made which made every doll, a masterpiece. These can be said as the first ever antique dolls. Such dolls in a good condition are very rare and so they are offered huge prices. These dolls are graceful and so they are taken as models by today’s doll makers.
Paper Mache:
The name indicates how the dolls were made. Compressing paper mixed with wooden pulp into the moulds is the process involved. These dolls were made in France, Germany and USA in the late nineteenth century. As they were not hand – made, they were the cheaper alternative for the wooden dolls. They are usually the shape of babies and their hands and legs were made of wood. The hair is painted in black color and the eyes are made of glass. These dolls are also rare to be found in a good condition as they have a soft body.
Wax Dolls:
From the beginning of the nineteenth century, dolls made out of wax came into the market. Wax was poured into warm moulds to make the shape of hands, legs and face. Later hair and eyes were fixed. People initially did this as a home – based business. But this did not last long as it created heat injuries, damage of the lungs due to dust or lead poisoning to the makers. But still wax dolls have a great attraction as they are more realistic than paper and wood. Their body was made of stuffed cloth and their head and limbs were made of wax.
China Dolls:
These dolls are just the head and the shoulders made of glazed whitish porcelain. The material gives a glazy shiny appearance. The hair and facial features are painted and the body is usually made of cloth or leather. Original china dolls were made in Germany. But countries like Japan and America reproduced these dolls. Original pieces are valued higher in the market.
So these dolls have been a vital part of our lives since ancient and archaic times and are here to stay for many more years to come.
