Transferring Old Cinema Film to DVD

No Comments 2 Min Read

The preservation of film is now becoming an art form in itself. Many film preservation businesses have emerged over the years that get hired by various clients, from ordinary people to movie studios. As time goes on the celluloid of film starts to deteriorate, which degrades the quality of the motion images while viewing them. So, the only solution is to try and save the images by transferring them to another source for optimal viewing. About thirty years ago film was transferred to VHS because that was the most popular way to view movies back then. In the last ten years, DVDs have taken over the main stream market for viewing films. Primarily, DVDs are produced for retail purposes but they can also serve the purpose of preserving old film as well. When transferring films to DVD you can easily archive your old films that are decaying and you can also have a more convenient way to view your films as well.

Most big film studios will just hire a company to transfer their films to DVD. But at $600 an hour, regular people cannot afford to pay a company to do this kind of transfer. So, they do it themselves using various home transferring methods. One particular method that is popular is using reverse kinescope. This is where you simply point your digital camcorder at a film screen that is projecting your old film. Then you upload that recording to your computer and then burn it onto a DVD. This is probably the easiest method and it is free to do as well. The only problem is the picture quality may not be as great. To get better picture quality you will need to find a way to directly connect the film into a digital recording device. Luckily, there are digital film camcorders on the market that serve this purpose. If you have an 8mm film, for example, you can buy an 8mm digital camcorder that will run the film. Then you simply upload the motion picture while its running into your computer using a simple USB connection. After that, like before just burn the motion picture to DVD and there you go. With this option you will have better picture quality that will look just like it is on a movie screen. Of course, the downside to this method is the cost. Film camcorders can cost a few thousand dollars at a retail store, which is definitely a lot for the average person. In the end it all depends on your budget, your needs and the quality of the preservation that you desire.
